The Truth About AIDS

For two weeks during the summer, Bertranna Abrams studied the topic of women and AIDS in the country of Guyana, South American. Abrams grew up in the culture and was curious about the AIDS problem there.

Bertranna visited foundations and health organizations and attended a AIDS conference. She also shared her own knowledge with churches, youth groups, and men's and women's organizations. She found that the prevelance of the disease was primarily linked to noncommunication and miseducation within the culture.

Miami's Summer Scholars program allowed her to receive a stipend and academic credit for her research work before and during her time in Guyana.

Bertranna plans to attend graduate school and continue helping women in third world countries, especially in the Caribbean area.
