Breath of fresh air
I am currently working with patients at Cincinnati Children's Hospital who have various forms of airway obstruction. Because these conditions often restrict breathing during normal activities, such as playing sports, speaking, or singing, I am working to develop a method of treatment that employs an "inspiratory trainer" to build the strength of the muscles used for breathing. Through my published research of this device, I can alert professionals to this approach to improved respiratory function and help to mitigate the physical limitations in these patients.
Getting through
I often use various forms of multimedia to help students grasp and visualize difficult concepts, and it's always satisfying when I see the look on their faces that say, "I get it!"
Inspiration
It was through my project as an undergraduate summer scholar here at Miami that I began to develop a real interest in the field of speech pathology and audiology and decided I wanted to learn more.
The best part about teaching at Miami
The best part about my job is the quality of the students I teach. Their intelligence and incredible motivation make my career more exciting and enjoyable.
Did you know?
I was a tour guide when I was a student at Miami. Sometimes I can't help myself from sharing interesting bits of history about Miami University with others!
Study partners
I enjoy involving students in my research projects; it allows them to learn what being engaged in research is like throughout all the stages of a project.
