Kathy Rowings
Of her career plans Kathy says, I had no idea what I wanted to do and [Miami} had a lot of options.

The write stuff

Kathy Rowings came to Miami because "I had no idea what I wanted to do, and [Miami] had a lot of options." The 2004 graduate originally thought about marketing but ended up declaring a major in English. After taking journalism classes and writing for The Miami Student, the twice-weekly student newspaper, Kathy realized how much she loved writing. Today she works as an editorial assistant for USA Weekend in Washington, D.C.

Just her luck

When Kathy first moved to D.C., she reported for a business and political newsletter. When a fill-in position at USA Weekend opened up, she interviewed. As it turned out, they needed a full-time employee, and Kathy got the job.

A little of everything

As part of her duties, Kathy researches and fact-checks for stories going into the weekend publication. She has also written some short articles and sidebars. "I do whatever anyone here asks me to do," she said.

Celeb mania

Kathy is always "in the know" when it comes to celebrity gossip, and she's interviewed a couple of pretty famous people. She recently talked to Cal Ripken, Jr. about a book he wrote and interviewed the only American to have climbed all of the world's highest mountains.

A humbling experience

Kathy said her favorite job so far has been reading the nominations for USA Weekend's annual "Most Caring Coach" contest. "Reading through all the nominations was truly inspiring," she said. "It's fun to learn all the celebrity scoop and know all about upcoming movies and TV shows, but it was even better to get to read all of these stories of great coaches and then reward three of them for everything they do."
