Transfer Credit

To help students obtain information about transfer credit evaluation, Miami University developed the free web-based Course Applicability System (CAS). This service allows students to determine if and how specific coursework will transfer and apply to degree programs at other participating institutions.

Transfer credit is granted for all college-level courses earned at a regionally accredited institution for which you received a grade of C or better. All transfer credit is posted to your Miami record without grades; therefore, the credits and grades are not computed in your Miami grade point average.

The Transfer Module is a set of core courses that all Ohio public colleges and universities have agreed will count for credit at any Ohio school. If you have successfully completed the Transfer Module at one Ohio college or university, you will be considered to have fulfilled the Transfer Module at Miami. However, you may be required to complete additional general education requirements that are not included in the Transfer Module. For example, all transfer students must complete the Miami Plan for Liberal Education, which is our core curriculum. It may include courses beyond the Transfer Module of your former school.

If you have attended an institution that is provisionally accredited by a regional accrediting agency, you must validate your coursework by earning 32 semester hours at Miami with a 2.0 cumulative grade point average and satisfy any divisional and departmental restrictions. You must petition credit that is more than 10 years old through the academic division in which you wish to enroll.

Quarter/Semester Conversion

A quarter hour is two-thirds of a semester hour. If you are transferring from a school on the quarter system, multiply the number of credit hours earned at your school by .6667 to compute the semester hour equivalent of your course work.

Credit Limitations

Non-traditional credit includes correspondence credit and armed forces credit. Non-traditional credit is limited to 32 semester hours; only 20 of the 32 hours may be in correspondence work from other institutions. All forms of non-traditional credit may be accepted only with the approval of the appropriate academic department.

Graduation Requirements

For the bachelor's degree, basic graduation requirements include the following:

• A minimum of 128 semester hours. Degree programs will vary in total hours required. Of the total 128 semester hours, at least 32 must be from Miami University (any campus), including 12 of the final 20 hours required for the bachelor's degree
• At least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average
• Fulfillment of The Miami Plan for Liberal Education
• Fulfillment of divisional and major requirements
• Submission of graduation application and fee (due the semester prior to graduation)
